Dashun Johnson - Northwest Academy of Law

Dashun Johnson - Northwest Academy of Law

Dashun Johnson is a standout for numerous reasons.  He has been a starter on the varsity team for his entire high school career.  Dashun began his career playing primarily offense in the role as quarterback.  At the start of last season he suffered a concussion.  Once he was released coached tried him at Safety.  What many student-athletes would have viewed as a setback, Dashun embraced as an opportunity to learn more about the game and become more versatile.  Determined to be a contributing member of the team Dashun embraced his new role working hard at every game and even harder at each practice.  Dashun excelled.  When he fully recovered he was asked to step back into the position of quarterback.  As a true team player he declined stating he did not want to disrupt the chemistry of the team.  Dashun has continued to learn the game and now has a star role, playing both sides of the ball at wide receiver and tight end on offense and safety on defense. His stats this season are very impressive with 242 receiving yards and 31 tackles.   He is a true example of hard work and determination.  Dashun also is a letterman in basketball and baseball at Northwest. Deshun “The Squirrel “Johnson has been a delight to have at the Great Northwest not only as an athlete but as a young gentleman.  There is no doubt that he will be a valuable asset to society! He plans to attend Tennessee State, or Jackson State. Thanks for the memories Squirrel!

Yada Smith - Sumner High School

Yada Smith - Sumner High School

Written by JV Williams - Head Football Coach at Sumner High School

I have had the privilege of knowing Yada Smith since August 2010.  He is a very determined, driven and dedicated young man who has a strong desire to overcome anything that comes his way.

Yada is a two way starter for the Sumner Bulldog football team at middle linebacker and he is also one of the schools best tennis players.  He is a young man that exhibits all the characteristics of what you would want in a student.  Hard work, honesty, and selfless are only a few words that I can use to describe Yada.  The most important accolade for Yada is that he embodies everthing that the definition of student athlete entails with a three year accumulative grade point average of 3.7 and being leading tackler on our football team.

Overall, Yada is filled with energy and takes on leadership roles.  He is a smart, humorous, caring and at times passtionate individual.  For those reasons and more I have chosen Yada to be Sumner' ESPN Rise Player of the Game!
